    • NOTE: His full name MAY have been George William Pamment. However, the use of the middle name "William" was only noted on his wife Mary Ann's death certificate. The informant on the certificate was a daughter who may or may not have known if his middle name was indeed William. Also, the use of the middle name was never noted during George's lifetime (birth, marriage, census, death) so it is being recorded as George Pamment with this note.

      Why George moved to Hampshire is unclear, but one speculation is that, after a parliamentary commission of 1859, the 1860s saw the building of a line of forts (Palmerston's follies) around Portsmouth. These forts would have required a large number of bricklayers, and Forton would be a nearby place to live.
