Death Notice from the British Medical Journal (BMJ.com) - KOLOMAN KROPACH
Former general practitioner, London (b Witzniz, Austria, 1912; qualified in Vienna 1937), d 7 November 2002.
Because Koloman Kropach, known as Karl, was Jewish, he worked unpaid as a hospital doctor and left just before Hitler invaded in August 1938, intending to join his brother, also a doctor, in Iraq. His adventurous journey took a month. He learnt Arabic and worked for a drug company before he was deported to Palestine in 1941. British intelligence had him evacuated on to a troop ship to a camp where his skills were used treating enteritis, malaria, meningitis etc, as well as being liaison officer using his language skills. He was asked to join the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1943 and served for five years in Somalia. He met Delia, a nurse serving with the Queen Alexandra’s, and they married in Mogadishu and returned to London and he was accepted on to the register, being sponsored by the chairman of the BMA and a barrister with whom he had served. His first post was as a registrar at Paddington Hospital. He decided to go into general practice as a post with London County Council arose with Luxborough Lodge, an old people’s home for a thousand residents, as the basis. He also built up a small private practice as contacts from the Middle East and Africa arrived. He enjoyed travel and visiting his son in New Zealand and daughter in Washington. He died suddenly on holiday in Tenerife. He leaves his wife, two children, and six grandchildren. [Jeanne Rathbone]
