From the Steinbach "Carillon News" (Manitoba, Canada), page 10, 21 March 1958, sub-title "Rosa News", the following appeared:
128 Descendants Survive Sarto Near-Centenarian
Funeral services were held in the St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Sarto on Monday, March 3, at 10:30 a.m. for Mrs. Francis Novak, a pioneer of the Sarto district. She died on Feb. 27 at the ripe old age of 97. Rev. Dean Zachrewsky of Vita, Rev. Stephan Kulak of Rosa, and Rev. Romanchuk of Sarto, all officiated at the funeral.
Mrs. Novak was born in the village of Towstenku in the Ukraine on Sept. 25, 1861, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lasiuk. She came to Canada in 1903 (NOTE: Many other references to date of family's emigration state "1899/1900.") with her husband, Anton Novak. They were among the first settlers in the Sarto district. Her husband predeceased her at the age of 72 in 1932. They had 10 children and in all they now have 128 living descendants. Of this number, 10 are children, 46 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren.
Children are John, Steve, and Joe of Yellow Creek, Sask., Teklia (Mrs. Mysnyk - NOTE: Her obituary of 1978 lists name as TEENIE NYZNYK) ) of Winnipeg; Nick and Paul of Hamilton, Ont.; Maria (Mrs. Borsa) of Winnipeg; Molly (Mrs. Yurkowski) of Sarto; Stanley of Orangeville, Ont. and Jack of Sarto, with whom his mother lived most of her latter life.
Pallbearers were her five sons, John, Steve, Nick, Stanley, Jack and a grandson, Joe Yurkowski of Transcona. Funeral arrangements were in charge of Loewen Funeral Home and interment was in Sarto cemetery, where her husband was previously buried.
